This course introduces the study of mythology, covering a wide range of material–from classical Greek myths to the pantheon of gods and goddesses and their amazing stories in world mythology. As myths are studied, students will discover similar themes and patterns reflected in stories from cultures around the world. Students may select cultural areas of interest as they study creation, world, urban and hero myths. Literacy skills will be practiced throughout the course, including: acquisition of mythical vocabulary; active reading; literal, inferential, and interpretative comprehension; and responding to mythical literature through discussion, presentations, informal and formal writing
You will grasp the essential aspects and elements of myths, legends, folk tales, rituals, and rites of passage while also understanding how such categories can overlap and even be reduced or expanded according to different peoples, “cultures,” and individuals around the world.
